We are excited to share with you the significance of Juneteenth, an important holiday in American history. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit.
At Skinner North, we believe in fostering an inclusive and diverse community. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. It is a time to reflect on our shared commitment to equality, justice, and respect for all.
Let's embrace Juneteenth as an opportunity to learn, grow, and stand united against racism and discrimination. We encourage you to celebrate with your families and take this time to reflect on the importance of equality and justice.
Please see below for a few updates and important dates.
Have a great day,
Katie and Mattea

Good News
A big congratulations to Beatriz! Beatriz’s History Day project qualified for the national competition which was held over the past week at the University of Maryland. Beatriz’s project won first place in the category of Junior Individual Website. This means that out of over one hundred websites selected as finalists from across the country, Beatriz’s was chosen as the best. The topic of the website was Crying Wolf: Social Perceptions of Wolves and the Yellowstone Project as an Environmental Frontier. Congratulations on your hard work and history prowess! Also a shoutout to Ms. Cox for her support of students in creation of their history fair projects.
