Skinner North Update 6/16

6/16/2023

Good morning,

We are excited to share with you the significance of Juneteenth, an important holiday in American history. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit.
At Skinner North, we believe in fostering an inclusive and diverse community. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. It is a time to reflect on our shared commitment to equality, justice, and respect for all.
Let's embrace Juneteenth as an opportunity to learn, grow, and stand united against racism and discrimination. We encourage you to celebrate with your families and take this time to reflect on the importance of equality and justice.
Please see below for a few updates and important dates.

Have a great day,
Katie and Mattea

Good News

A big congratulations to Beatriz!  Beatriz’s History Day project qualified for the national competition which was held over the past week at the University of Maryland. Beatriz’s project won first place in the category of Junior Individual Website. This means that out of over one hundred websites selected as finalists from across the country, Beatriz’s was chosen as the best.  The topic of the website was Crying Wolf: Social Perceptions of Wolves and the Yellowstone Project as an Environmental Frontier. Congratulations on your hard work and history prowess!  Also a shoutout to Ms. Cox for her support of students in creation of their history fair projects.

Construction Update
We are in full swing with our construction project.  We are getting a new HVAC system and updated bathrooms.  Please email if you need to get in contact as our office is also under construction, so the phones are not always accessible.  We thank everyone for their flexibility this summer as we are not able to host our typical summer programming.

Hiring
We are looking to fill 2 miscellaneous positions.  These positions are hourly and workers are paid between $17-$18.  These positions do a variety of things including helping in classrooms, assisting in the office and assisting with lunch/recess if needed.  Hours can be flexible.  If you know of anyone interested, please have them apply or reach out.
Applications can be submitted at https://cpsk12il.taleo.net/careersection/3/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en.
You can search the position with the following information -  Part-Time Seasonal (ID: 2300013L).

SY24 Directory
Please see this link for the 2023-2024 Skinner North Directory.  We will update as we get new submissions and will resend closer to the beginning of the school year.  If you are not included and would like to be or if there is an error in your information, please use this link to submit your information.  However, we wanted to send in case families wanted to get in contact/have play dates prior to the school year.

Transferring?
Please let us know if your student(s) will not be returning next school year.  This helps us ensure we have accurate numbers for enrollment next school year and opportunity to offer the spot to another student.  Use this survey to let us know.

School Supplies
Just a friendly reminder that Friday, June 30th is the final day to order your back-to-school supply kit from 1st Day School Supplies! Ordering from 1st Day guarantees you the exact supplies your child needs for the start of the school year, with only the brands you trust and respect like Ticonderoga, Crayola, Elmer's and Clorox. Plus, you're going to save up to 30% over shopping at Target, Walmart or even on Amazon! Don't wait, buy early and save!  These supplies will be shipped directly to school and will be ready for your students' first day on August 21st!
Order here: http://1stdayschoolsupplies.com/kits.php?sid=1179329

If you would prefer to order/purchase your school supplies, you can find the lists here.
