Skinner North Update 12/21 - #2

12/21/2022

Good morning,

We are writing with an update for tomorrow.  All CPS schools will be open tomorrow, Thursday, December 22, 2022. All students should arrive at school buildings as usual for a full day of instruction.

However, as a reminder, all after-care and out-of-school-time activities have been canceled for Thursday, December 22 due to the forecasted weather conditions. Students should be picked up by 3:30.  Also, Thursday is the final day of classes before Winter Break, so students should not report to school on Friday, December 23.

Please use extra caution and allow for more time to pick up your student.  Stay safe and happy holidays!

Please read below for a few other updates from the district.

Have a wonderful winter break,
Katie and Mattie

CPS Religious Practices Survey - The Office of Family and Community Engagement (FACE) and the Office of Equity are partnering to better understand and accommodate the religious practices of CPS students and families. We are writing with two opportunities to share in order to gather feedback about how we can best accommodate the unique needs and aspirations among the diverse religious traditions and cultural practices of our school community:
Community Survey
Please complete by 5 p.m. on March 17, 2023
Survey Link
This is a 15-20 minute anonymous survey to help inform how we accommodate religious practices and learn about more opportunities for engagement.

Focus Groups
February 13 - May 22, 2023
Registration Link
Community members will collaborate to review the drafts of the updated policies. Meetings will consist of a reflection, presentation, and small group discussions.

Need access to a computer? You are welcome to visit any Chicago Public Library location to complete this survey or register for our focus group. Click here for more information about locations and hours.
For more information about FACE and the Department of Faith Based Initiatives, please visit the FACE website. For more information about the districts’ current efforts to create more equitable schools, we encourage you to review the Office of Equity website. If you have any questions, accommodation requests, or ideas about how CPS can foster more inclusive partnerships, please email face@cps.edu and equity@cps.edu.

Reminder from CPS to Get Your Flu Vaccine - Getting your annual flu vaccine is one of the easiest ways to help keep you and your family healthy over the holidays. While it may seem like a small thing, getting your flu vaccine can have a big impact.
Here’s a quick look at what the flu vaccine does and how it benefits you and the larger community:
The flu vaccine is an annual vaccination that builds your body’s defense against the influenza virus. The vaccine trains your immune system to recognize and defend against the virus if you come into contact with it.
Not only does the vaccine protect you, but it also stops or slows the spread of the virus. This means by protecting yourself, you are also protecting those with compromised immune systems who may not be able to receive the vaccine themselves.

CPS is offering flu vaccines alongside COVID-19 vaccines at our four regional clinics and both our elementary and high school mobile programs. For additional opportunities to get a flu vaccine, visit this page.
To learn more about all services that CPS Student Health and Wellness can offer, please visit cps.edu/oshw or call the Healthy CPS Hotline at (773) 553-KIDS (5437).

Good morning and happy holidays!  We hope everyone is staying warm today.

Based on the weather forecast, CPS has canceled all after school programming tomorrow (Thursday, 2/22).  This includes Right At School.  Students must be picked up at 3:30.  We will keep you updated if any further decisions are made by the district in terms of school tomorrow.

Please remember that Friday (12/23) is a school improvement day and this is a non-attendance day for students.  In addition, Winter break goes from Monday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Jan. 6.  We will see students back on Monday, January 9th.

Please read below for a few other updates and reminders.

Have a happy holiday season and happy New Year,
Katie and Mattie

--------------------------------------------------------------

Excusing Absences - The picture at the end of this note lists the allowable ways to submit absence excusals for students.  The E-Absence feature is new.  You can learn how to do this via this video.

Please note, it does take up to 24 hours to process the E-Absence, so if the reason for absence is an allowable one per the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), you will see it after that time frame.

Allowable reasons per ISBE can be seen on our absence note.  On the electronic one, if a student is using a mental health day or has an injury it would be marked as student illness and then, described as a mental health day or illness in the given description section.  Remember student travel/family trips are not valid reasons to excuse an absence.

Skinner North Spelling Bee - Is your child in need of a challenging, yet fun activity during the Winter Break?  If so, then they might be interested in preparing for Skinner North’s Spelling Bee.  This year’s bee will take place after the break.  Classroom teachers will host their events in early January with the school-wide bee being held on Friday, January 20th.  The bee is open to any student in grades 1st through 8th.
Study tools can be found here.
Any questions, please reach out to Dr. Magnuson at kmagnuson@cps.edu.

K-2 Winter Assembly - On January 18th we are going to have a winter musical performance for parents in the auditorium.  Each class has been working hard in music, learning winter songs and dances to go along with them.  They are so excited to perform for you, their peers and their families. To make sure that we have enough space we are going to have the kids perform twice, at 9 am and 2 pm.  In years past the kids have 'dressed' up in their best performance gear to make pictures extra memorable.

Good afternoon,

We hope you are having a wonderful week.  This time of year can be busy for families.  We hope you can find some time to relax and enjoy the weekend.  Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate!  This year Hanukkah starts Sunday, Dec. 18 and ends Monday, December 26.   Also, this article provides an interesting perspective on How Blue and White Became Colors of Hanukkah.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Katie and Mattea
----------------------------------------------------
Lost and Found Donation and Refugee One Donations  - Please remember that our lost and found is donated at the end of the quarter, which is Thursday, Dec. 22.  Remind your student to look before the donation if they have missing items.  This quarter, remaining items will be donated to Refugee One. This aligns with the drive our 8th graders organized.  They presented to classrooms on the history of refugees in the United States, which culminated in this school-wide service project. If you would like to donate, please drop off any of the items listed in this flier, SN Refugee Donation Flyer.pdf,  at school in the designated boxes, in the front lobby by 12/22.
Winter Spirit Week - We will hold a winter spirit week the week before break (12/19-12/22) to build some fun prior to the winter break.  See below for the themes
Monday (12/19) - Wear blue and white in honor of friends who celebrate Hanukkah and to stand up to anti-semitism.
Tuesday (12/20) - Winter is coming!  Wear your favorite warm sweater and/or socks.
Wednesday (12/21) - Holiday Cheer - Wear your favorite holiday sweater, vest, shirt, socks and/or accessories
Thursday (12/22) - Dreams of kindness - Wear your favorite PJs.
