Diversity Committee Cultural Observances Celebrated by Our School Community The second Monday of October is recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day. Chicago is the ancestral homelands of the Council of the Three Fires: the Potawatomi, Objiwe, and Odawa, and a site of trade, travel, and healing for many more tribes. The last federally recognized tribe to hold title to land in Chicago were the Potawatomi, who were forced to cede the last of their territory in 1833. Today, the Chicago area is home to an estimated 65,000 Indigenous people. You can learn more about youth activism among our city's Native communities and their push to create the First Nations Garden at the corner of Wilson and Pulaski, here and here. October 11 is National Coming Out Day. You can find resources and stories here. October 9-16 (sundown to sundown): Sukkot, a seven-day Jewish festival. October 16-18 (sundown to sundown): Shemini Atzeret, a Jewish holiday also known as the Eighth (Day) of Assembly, takes place the day after the Sukkot festival, where gratitude for the fall harvest is deeply internalized. As we wrap up Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month on October 15, we want to send a special shout-out to Ms. Walkowski, who organized school field trips to Cantigny Park to see Alebrijes in addition to other classroom and buddy classroom learning activities. For more information on the Cantigny art exhibit our students visited, see here. Have a wonderful long weekend, Katie and Mattea ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Local School Council Agenda - Our next LSC meeting is Wednesday, October 12 at 10AM. Please see this link for the agenda and virtual login information. Battle of the Books - We're excited to participate in our third year of Battle of the Books and are seeking volunteer coaches! There are 2 open coach slots for grades 4th-6th and 1 slot for a 7th-8th coach. There is some flexibility here, as you *can* meet virtually but it is preferred that you meet in person. In the past, teams have met once every 2 weeks. The positions are open to staff and parents. If you're a parent, you must be cleared as a level 1 volunteer and can start that process here: https://chicagopublicschools.civicore.com/admin/index.php?section=application&action=new Click here to view this year's book list. If you're interested in coaching and/or have any questions regarding BoB, please email Ms. Syed at msyed13@cps.edu. Fall Fest - A few hundred Skinner North students, staff, & families came together on the gorgeous fall day on Friday to celebrate community, to raise funds for the school, and to have fun! THANK YOU, Skinner North Fall Fest parent volunteers (all 50+ of you!), for building a fantastic event! Your time, energy, and enthusiasm are part of what makes this school community special. Thank you to those of you who participated in the Mystery Box Raffle! Prize winners will be announced at school this week. This year was only the 2nd time FoSN hosted Fall Fest, a 100% parent volunteer-planned and run event. Click here to share your thoughts. Your feedback is appreciated to shape future planning.
