Good morning,
As you know, Dr. Kimbrough has moved into the principalship at Jahn elementary. Based on this, I began our search for an assistant principal. This included interviews with a parent, student and staff panel. I was so grateful to have the input of groups of stakeholders to make this important decision.
After a rigorous assistant principal search, we were able to find our new assistant principal. I would like to introduce Mattea Walsh. Mattea has been a teacher at Skinner North for 3 years. She has a strong understanding of the school, has shown strong commitment to our values and has already held various leadership positions including membership on our Instructional Leadership team, Local School Council and Friends of Skinner North. I look forward to her leadership and partnership. Please read below for a note of introduction from her.

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter of introduction as the new Assistant Principal of Skinner North Classical School. I am incredibly grateful and excited to move from the classroom into the Assistant Principal role in a school community that I love. I look forward to working in partnership with Dr. Magnuson and the staff, to continue the incredible work that is being done here. I am very excited about the key aims of our building, such as rigorous differentiated instruction, educating the whole student, academically and emotionally and constantly refining the curriculum to ensure it speaks to the student experience. Plus, I cannot wait to cheer on our students as they take the field, track, court, or stage!
I have spent nine years in education as a classroom teacher. I have experience teaching primary grades and have encouraged a love of learning in all subject areas. While my teaching background is in primary grades, I have always loved Math and Science, and I know how important and enriching extracurriculars and the arts are for a student’s experience and growth. In my eyes, our rigorous differentiated instruction, our belief in educating the whole child and social justice aims are not at all mutually exclusive, and I am looking forward to working with stakeholders to plan what the connection of all of these things will look like for students.
The Skinner North Community can expect that I will believe in our students, and I will fight like crazy to ensure they have the best educational opportunities and experiences possible during every second of their nine years at our school. I can promise that in me you will find a responsive, reliable, and authentic leader who will work alongside every person in our building and community to achieve our collective goals. I commit to working with all stakeholders to create systems and structures that outline the values of the Skinner North Community. Most importantly I will work endlessly to make our building a vibrant place where a love for learning and an excitement for school is fostered by students, educators and families creating a special home within Skinner North.
On a more personal note, I grew up in Chicago on the southside of the city, in Beverly with my parents and two younger sisters. My parents still live in the house I grew up in and love to have all of us over for family dinners on Sunday. I currently live in Lakeview East, my family might never forgive me for being a northsider. I love to cook, run and ride my bike on the lakefront path and spend time with friends. On the weekends you can find me spending time outside and sometimes sneaking to the suburbs to horseback ride. I am committed to working alongside Dr. Magnuson as we continue to make Skinner a premier school for the city of Chicago. I cannot wait to begin this work with each and every one of you.
