Good afternoon!  I hope everyone is doing well and having a great summer.  Walking through the stores, it feels like school is already starting with all the back to school deals :)  As a reminder, the first day of school for students is Monday, August 30.  Please read below for a few updates.  We will continue to send updates as we get closer to the beginning of the school year.

Have a great day,
Katie

Supply Lists - Please see this link for the supply lists for the upcoming school year.  Click on your students' grade level to access the list.

Construction Projects - We have been limited in summer programs due to our construction projects that are happening.  The projects include some exterior/interior painting, new roof, new circle drive and some masonry work.  We are excited for students to come back to a refreshed building.

Health and Safety Updates for the 2021-22 School Year - Please see information shared by the district in regards to health and safety measures for the coming year at the following link: http://www.skinnernorth.org/latest-news/important-health-safety-updates-for-the-2021-22-school-year

In case you missed it:

Virtual Academy (Today is the last day of sign up) - Though a majority of students will return to school five days a week, we anticipate that a small subset of students will need to continue remote learning based on medical needs verified by a healthcare provider. To support these students, CPS is launching Virtual Academy: a central model of remote instruction. All instruction in the Virtual Academy will need to be in compliance with Illinois School Code 10-29.  Students will be able to transition back into in-person learning (at the quarter mark for elementary, and at the semester mark for high school) based on changing situations. All students not enrolled in the Virtual Academy will attend in person learning next year.

Applications for Virtual Academy will be approved through the Office of Student Health & Wellness. The APPLICATION WINDOW opens June 18th and closes July 23rd.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
  • Students who meet the medical fragility requirements and want to enroll in the virtual academy should apply.
  • To apply, have the COVID-19 Health Eligibility form submitted by a licensed medical provider [Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)].
  • Forms should be emailed to virtualenrollment@cps.edu or faxed to 773-553-6563 to the attention of Virtual Enrollment.

To learn about Virtual Academy and how to apply, please visit cps.edu/VirtualAcademy.

Before and After Care -
We are excited to share information for our new before and after school care provider.  We are partnering with Right at School this year.  They will provide daily before and after school, paid programming for students.  (Programming starts on the first day of school Aug. 30.  The website had an error.  I believe it is now corrected.)

See their informational flier at this link.

The link to sign up is https://rightatschool-skinner-north-classical-school.jumbula.com/#/2021-22-before-after-school.

*Please note:
  • We will not be able to offer free care from 8-8:30 like we did in the past.  Only students signed up for before care/before school programming and bus riders will be able to enter the building prior to 8:30.
  • If cost is a barrier for you, there are discounts available on the Right at School website.  (You can also email Katie (kmagnuson@cps.edu) if you need help navigating this.)
  • We will also be offering free programming through After School All-Stars during the year.  These are typically 10-20 week programs (1-2 days a week).  The program information/registration usually comes out in October.
  • You can find more information about Stanton Park District Programming at https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/stanton-edwin-park.  Fall programming is not posted yet.  (Stanton Park is attached to our building and we usually have a number of students attend after care there.)

Important Health & Safety Updates for the 2021-22 School Year

Important Health & Safety Updates for the 2021-22 School Year

Dear CPS Parents and Guardians,

The best, safest place for our students to learn is in the classroom, and we are looking forward to welcoming your children back to full in-person learning five days a week beginning Monday, August 30. We know parents are eager to prepare their students to return, and we are writing to provide additional information about what school will look like for the 2021-22 school year.

Our decisions are based on the most current health guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH)—who all agree that ensuring students have access to in-person learning five days a week is the highest priority. The district’s health and safety protocols are designed to provide all students with the in-person education they deserve while keeping everyone in our school communities healthy and safe.

Masks/Cloth Face Coverings
Based on feedback from our public health experts at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), we will require that masks/cloth face coverings continue to be worn indoors by everyone, regardless of vaccination status, except for while eating or drinking. This includes students, educators, support staff, and all visitors to school buildings. Face coverings may be removed for outdoor activities, such as recess and some sports activities. Continuing to require masks will help make sure those in our school communities who are not yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, which encompasses the majority of our students, remain as safe as possible.

Social Distancing
As part of our safety plan, CPS will ensure that three feet of social distancing is maintained wherever possible. We know that there will be times when this is not possible due to the population of schools and classrooms, and will use additional health and safety strategies, including air purifiers, hand sanitizer, cleaning and disinfecting, contact tracing, and cloth face-coverings to maximize safety for students and staff.

Daily Meals
To help ensure social distancing during breakfast and lunch, some students will eat in their classrooms and others will eat in their school cafeteria. When children are eating in school cafeterias or other designated meal spaces, they will stay three feet apart where possible and will be allowed to remove their masks while eating and drinking. This strategy will allow for health measures to be in place even during unmasked times and will enable each school to schedule lunch periods based on what works best for their students and staff.

Our goal is to keep all students healthy and safe while they learn in-person five days a week with their teachers and peers so they can receive the education and supports they need and deserve. Based on widespread scientific consensus, we know that proven strategies like the ones announced today will keep students healthy, safe and supported. We will continue to follow public health guidance in partnership with the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and update our health protocols as needed. We look forward to welcoming students back on Monday, August 30 and will continue to provide you with updates as guidelines for the new school year are finalized.

Sincerely,

José M. Torres, PhD
Interim Chief Executive Officer
